Dr Emmanuel Edet, 61 and his wife Antan, 58 took a 13 year
old boy, now known as Mr Inut, in 1989 from Nigeria to be their houseboy in
exchange for payment and education. Instead he was made to work at least
17hours every day in the couple’s home cooking, cleaning and caring for their 2 children with no pay or education for 24 years.
He wasn’t allowed out of the house or in certain rooms in the home. He was kept
compliant by threats of arrest by the police if he was discovered due to his
illegal immigrant status. Mr Inut, now nearly 40, was liberated in December 2013when
he contacted the UK charity Hope for justice from a computer at the couple’s
home after seeing an advert about modern day slavery.
The couple were taken to court and found guilty of holding a
person in slavery or servitude, child cruelty and assisting unlawful
immigration. They will be sentenced on 7th of December.
The victim is now living a new life in the UK. He is
studying, has his own home and is free to come and go as he pleases.
