Constipation

What is it?

This is a common but painful condition that occurs when the contents of the large intestine move slowly allowing more water to be absorbed from the faecal matter making it harder and more compacted. It is defined as a change in bowel habit such that no stools are passed for at least 3 days.

What causes it?

·        Lack of exercise

·        Eating a fibre-poor diet.

·        Not drinking enough fluids

·        Some medication such as painkillers containing codeine, antacids containing aluminum, antidepressants, iron supplements, anti-spasmodics and anti-epileptics

·        Pregnancy

·        Old age- unfortunately as we get older the movement of the large intestine will start to slow down.

·        Long-term laxative usage- if you use laxatives too often they may stop have the desired effect.

·        Cancer - this is quite rare. A cancerous growth within the intestine can cause diarrhea. and/or constipation. It is normally accompanied by unintentional weight loss and bloody stools.

What does it look like?

·        Not passing stool as often as you normally would

·        Feeling like you can’t empty your bowels completely

·        Difficulty passing stools

·        Pain when defecating due to solid hard compacted stools

·        Stomachache or cramping that is relieved by bowel movements

How can I get rid of it without medication

·        Make dietary changes such as increasing fiber and fluid intake. Eat more fruits and veg

·        Start gentle exercises

·        Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day

·        Eat plenty of wholegrain

·        Avoid not answering the call of nature.

Tried without meds but still there!

·        Stimulant laxatives- these work by stimulating movement of faeces in the bowel to promote excretion. These should only be used short term only by adults. Examples: dulcolax and senna and glycerin suppositories.

·        Bulk forming laxative – these contain natural fiber which work by bulking up the stools and thus making the intestine move faster. They usually work within 24-36 hours and should always be taken with plenty of water. Examples: fybogel.

·        Osmotic laxatives – these work by drawing fluids into the bowel softening the stool making them easier to pass. They can take up to 3 days to work but are a gentler option. Examples: lactulose, laxido, movicol, dulcobalance.

·        Faecal softener – these work by lubricating the faeces making them easier to pass. Examples dulcoease and glycerin.
